TERRAGRN TO REGENERATE UNUSED LAND
Terragrn is a private sector company that transforms degraded and under-used landscapes into sustainable and biodiverse agro-forests that sequester carbon. Over the next ten years, it will turn 200 000 hectares of unused land in Mpumalanga into a sustainable, land management agro-forestry project.
The company’s vision is to deliver nature-based solutions that provide jobs, food security and alternative power solutions that will drive an energy transition in South Africa, and eventually into other parts of Africa.
The overall solution in Mpumalanga ticks all the boxes of climate resilience, community empowerment and economic growth. This is being achieved by way of an integrated agro-forestry system designed with commercialised plants to assist in growing and harvesting sustainable, non-invasive bamboo, as well as a productive food forest, both of which will significantly boost the conservation of the local natural habitat. The investment will take place through multi-phased financing over ten years, aligned with the forest’s development and expansion.
In Mpumalanga, pressure is mounting for the province (and South Africa) to diversify energy supplies with renewables, and pave the way for a future beyond coal.
By revitalising degraded landscapes, Terragrn addresses and mitigates the environmental, social and economic impacts of the climate crisis.
