PRINCE BUTHELEZI MALL
Construction of the Prince Buthelezi Mall in Empangeni, KZN, has officially commenced. Formerly known as Greenhills Mall, it has been renamed after this remarkable figure in South Africa’s history. The mall is scheduled to open in April 2026.
Empangeni currently does not have a comprehensive shopping centre and most of the town’s retail activities are scattered between the CBD and surrounding suburbs, making it difficult for residents to meet their daily retail needs. Prince Buthelezi Mall’s one-stop shopping vision responds to this need in a modern, enclosed regional shopping mall with 37 000 m2 of shopping choices.
The mall is located on the R102, at its junction with the John Ross Highway. It is 15km from Richards Bay, 3.5km from the Empangeni CBD, and close to several residential neighbourhoods that are diverse in their needs, income and spending patterns. Moolman Group’s Steph Beyers says the mall will be transformative for the community, providing a large new taxi rank, ample free parking, a modern design, communal seating areas and an air-conditioned shopping experience. Anchor tenants include Checkers FreshX, Shoprite, Woolworths, Boxer, Dis-Chem and Clicks.
The mall is being built on a former sugar cane field and has been designed by MDS Architects to reflect its setting. Local contractors have been prioritised for construction. It builds on the area’s strong business traditions, yet retains its small-town charm. The concept design is inspired by the rolling hills, natural landscapes and sugar cane fields of KZN, with the main entrance echoing the curved shapes of the hills, and vertical green slats screening the entrances that echo the surrounding sugar cane fields.
