MUSA AND CHOC SA ON MANDELA DAY
Updated: Aug 24, 2023
The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting children and teenagers with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders. Together with performer Musa Motha, CHOC commemorated Nelson Mandela Day (18 July) at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
Musa was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 11, leading to the amputation of his left leg. His passion for soccer and an unyielding spirit guided him to discover the art of dance, and today he is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning performer, having received the Golden Buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent.
During his visit to the hospital, he was accompanied by Prof. Gita Naidoo, who was part of the team that treated him. She said Musa was “an inspiration to young children and teenagers, instilling a sense of hope and motivation in them.” She added that his presence was a tribute to Mandela’s enduring legacy and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
Hedley Lewis, CEO of the Childhood Cancer Foundation, said that Musa’s story was “a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit” and that everyone should remember these words of Madiba: “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”
