LANDSCAPER’S HANDBOOK
Updated: Aug 5
The South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) launched a new version of its standards manual at the recently held SAGIC Convention, which took place at the beginning of June in Stellenbosch. Renamed The Landscaper’s Handbook, it is a comprehensive guide to landscaping, shaped by the collective efforts of this dedicated industry.
In early 2018, the SALI National Executive Committee embarked on a journey to update the SALI specifications. The national committee, including Gafley Carelse, Gerhard Lotz, Redewaan Isaacs, Rudi Jonck, Marcus Govender and Mikki Roxmouth, played pivotal roles in shaping the document that would unify standards within the landscaping industry.
This handbook, a result of their collective vision, is intended to assist landscape service providers, architects, garden designers, contractors, municipalities, educational institutions and the wider green industry, including SALI, SANA, ILASA, SABI, LIA, IERM, IPSA and the Green Industries Council.
Guided by principles of environmental sustainability and water wise methodologies, the document establishes proactive standards for constructing and maintaining landscapes. The long-term view is to update the document biannually, ensuring its relevance by incorporating specialised practices within the landscaping industry.
