GBCSA ANNUAL CONVENTION
Updated: Dec 13, 2022
The Green Building Convention is a flagship event of the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA), attracting over 850 built environment professionals in both the public and private sectors in Africa and around the world. It took place in Cape Town from 2-4 November 2022.
At the opening of the event, CEO Lisa Reynolds said that the GBCSA had reported a record 165 green building certifications in 2022 alone, bringing the total number to 905 certifications since 2009. She shared her optimism for the future of green building, indicating that the GBCSA would be moving beyond buildings towards how South Africa as a whole could contribute to a low carbon future.
Partnerships and collaboration were an important theme at the convention, as key drivers for transitioning to a sustainable, green built environment. Nedbank, a close partner of GBCSA since its inception in 2007, came on board as a lead sponsor of this years’ convention and Rand Water, another lead sponsor and close partner of GBCSA, highlighted the urgency to conserve the environment in light of the dire climate crisis signs including drought, floods, environmental degradation, resource depletion and pollution.
During the convention, the winners and runners up of the 2022 Annual Leadership Awards were announced. The criteria for qualifying green projects are based on data gathered during the GBSCA’s Green Star certification process. This year’s highest rated building was The Ridge, owned by the V & A Waterfront.
