CLEMENGOLD AND SA HARVEST DONATE FRUIT
Updated: Jul 27, 2023
Clemengold International, a global mandarin brand with its roots in South Africa, has announced a partnership with SA Harvest, a registered NPO and leading food rescue/hunger relief organisation. One thousand tonnes of citrus fruit will be donated during the 2023 citrus season, and the first 68 tonnes have been dispatched from a packhouse in Nelspruit to receiving communities in Durban. In a bid to reduce food waste and hunger in South Africa, SA Harvest drives initiatives such as these to channel surplus food from farms, manufacturers and retailers to those in need.
Clemengold annually distributes more than four million pieces of citrus to beneficiaries at creches, old age homes, hospitals, schools and other non-profit institutions in areas where nutrition is a daily challenge. However, they have limited ability to handle the logistics of this and joining forces with SA Harvest enables them to have an even bigger impact, reaching areas beyond their immediate surroundings.
Delivering nutritious food is a cornerstone of SA Harvest’s philosophy, and food-insecure communities often face barriers to accessing it. This results in issues such as malnourishment and various diet-related health conditions. Through its network of beneficiary organisations including soup kitchens, old age homes and community outreach programmes, the donation of citrus fruit will nourish people in these communities who need it most, particularly children.
Alan Browde, CEO and founder of SA Harvest, says they are “extremely grateful” to The OneFarm Share programme, an initiative by HelloChoice and Standard Bank, for supplying the bins in which the loose fruit is transported, as well as to their transport partners Unitrans, Lee Transport, Value Logistics, Teralco Logistics and Allied Transport.
